The article presents the results of an extensive blind tasting of 66 single-varietal Assyrtiko wines from across Greece, exploring the grape’s growing diversity and the distinctive expression of different regional terroirs.
Lyrarakis Voila Assyrtiko received the tasting’s highest distinction—three cats—and was named “one of the best wines of the tasting.” The review praised its balance, lively acidity, subtle creaminess and long, saline, gently phenolic finish. Its ageing potential was also highlighted, with the wine described as “worth seeking out” and offering “exceptional value for money.”
Renowned for its naturally high acidity and remarkable ability to age, Assyrtiko has become one of Greece’s most important white grape varieties. In Crete, the island’s maritime influence gives the variety a distinctive saline character, complemented by freshness, structure and the capacity to evolve beautifully in the bottle.
